Look for a light foot sweep that catches the opponent’s advancing foot just as it becomes unweighted.
Starting position
Both judoka are standing in a natural posture and moving together rather than planted in place.
Typical grip
A standard sleeve-and-lapel grip is commonly used to guide the opponent’s upper body with the sweep.
Kuzushi · balance breaking
Guide the opponent forward and slightly toward the side of the advancing foot as their weight transfers away from it.
Tsukuri · entry and position
Match the opponent’s movement and place the sweeping foot close to the outside of the advancing ankle without reaching or leaning.
Kake · completion
Continue the hand action while the sole of the foot brushes the advancing foot sideways in the direction it is already traveling.
Expected result
The opponent’s advancing foot is removed from its path and their body turns toward the mat under controlled guidance.
Visual study notes
Prototype limitation: each phase repeats one rights-tracked reference illustration. This is not a true sequential demonstration and must not be used as a substitute for instructor-led practice.

Common beginner mistakes
•
Sweeping after the foot has already accepted full weight.
•
Kicking the ankle instead of brushing with relaxed timing.
•
Stopping the sleeve-and-lapel action when the feet make contact.
Coaching tips to discuss in class
•
Study the timing first: the target foot should look light, not planted.
•
Keep an upright posture and let the hands and sweeping foot act together.
•
Think “follow the step” rather than “force the foot.”
Technique-specific safety
Practice only on mats with a qualified instructor and a cooperative partner who can breakfall. Do not kick the ankle or attempt the sweep on an unsuspecting person.
