TECHNIQUE VIDEO
RECOGNITION CUE
Look for a compact inside reap at the heel as the opponent’s weight settles onto one foot.
Starting position
Both judoka stand in close moving balance with a clear path for the attacker’s foot to enter inside the target leg.
Typical grip
A sleeve-and-lapel grip commonly keeps the opponent upright but unable to remove the weighted foot.
Kuzushi · balance breaking
Direct the opponent backward or toward the rear corner so the target heel becomes weighted.
Tsukuri · entry and position
Step close with stable posture and bring the reaping foot to the inside of the opponent’s heel without turning the knee inward.
Kake · completion
Continue the hand direction while the foot lightly reaps the weighted heel forward and away from its base.
Expected result
The opponent loses the small inside support and falls backward or to the rear corner under the attacker’s grip control.

Stopping the upper-body pressure during the reap.
Coaching tips to discuss in class
Recognize this as a small, close attack rather than a large leg swing.
Wait until the heel looks planted before the reap.
Keep the knee aligned and the torso upright.
